GUERRAS CULTURAIS

No mesmo lugar em que publicou o texto sobre a eutanásia que transcrevemos anteriormente, o esplêndido Murray N. Rothbard dissertou sobre a guerra em curso pela mente humana e pelo controlo cultural do Ocidente e na qual, como se sabe, a esquerda está a vencer por dez a zero. Publicamos em baixo um extracto dessa passagem, em que omitimos apenas o que nos pareceu secundário para o argumento, sobretudo por mencionar eventos ou protagonistas que pouco dirão hoje a habitantes desta língua e deste lado do Atlântico. Mantivemos Pat Buchanan, praticamente um fóssil político, os incríveis Clintons – a inefável Hillary e o marido, a que Rothbard chama apropriadamente Slick Willie (O Willie Escorregadio) – e Woody Allen, este protótipo do Judeu Útil, uma personagem sem a qual o século XX e o seu filho XXI dificilmente serão compreensíveis. Falta a eminência parda do amor universal e igualitário, George Soros, mas não se pode ter tudo. E Rothbard morreu em 1995, que diabo.

Yes, yes, you rotten hypocritical liberals, it’s a culture war! And high time, too! It is, of course, typical of our liberal “intellectual” and media elite: after having ridden through and captured our culture, after twenty-odd years (at least!) of their cultural conquest of America proceeding almost unopposed, after completing their successful Gramscian (note: much revered Italian Stalinist of the 1920s) “long march through our institutions,” liberals were just about ready to sit down and treat us as their conquered province. When suddenly, some of us beleaguered provincials began to fight back—rallied, of course, by Pat Buchanan’s speech at the Republican National Convention.

(…) Gee, since when has politics ever “divided” us? I thought, and until the twentieth century it was gloriously true, that the whole point of politics is to “divide” people, to separate people by principle and ideology and to have them slug it out, each trying to gain a majority support of the population. Isn’t that the point of democratic politics, of a more-than-one party system?

O HUMANITARISMO DA GUILHOTINA

Escrevendo em 1991 para um periódico que publicava juntamente com Lew Rockwell, The Rothbard-Rockwell Report, Murray N. Rothbard dedicou duas páginas ao tema da eutanásia. Encontrá-las-eis a seguir, no inglês original do autor. É possível ver nestes curtos parágrafos que o tema tinha já então, há quase trinta anos atrás, os contornos que hoje toma neste pequeno canteiro de nabiças inanes à beira do Atlântico. Não há nada de novo, ao que parece, debaixo do sol.

THE RIGHT TO KILL, WITH DIGNITY?

For a long time now we have been subjected to a barrage of pro-death propaganda by left-liberals, and by their cheering squad, left, or modal, Libertarians. The “right to die,” the “right to die with dignity” (whatever that means), the right to get someone to assist you in suicide, the “right to euthanasia,” etc. Up till now, left-liberals have at least appeared to be scrupulous in stressing the crucial importance of consent by the killed victim, because otherwise the right to die with dignity looks very much like the right to commit murder. For what is compulsory euthanasia but murder, pure and simple?
